According to the statistics revealed recently in the report entitled “E-commerce in Poland 2022”, online card payments are among the TOP 3 most popular order payment methods. This is hardly surprising – the possibilities that the payment card provides in e-commerce are plentiful.

Why do we like to pay with a card when shopping online?

First and foremost card payments are a safe solution. The use of modern technology, the 3D Secure standard (consistent with the guidelines set out in the EU directive PSD2), among others, allays the buyers’ concern about the security of their transactions. Second, card payment is a comfortable solution. You don’t have to log in to your bank or a mobile app. It takes just one click in online stores that have implemented the One Click model. Buyers provide the card details during their first shopping in a given online store, which may subsequently be “remembered”. Any future orders will only require the confirmation.

What is common to one click payments, subscription renewal and payments in a foreign online store without disadvantageous currency conversion? All these solutions are based on the payment card (e.g. Mastercard). What does the payment process look like in practice in case of these payments, then?

One Click

As already mentioned, this is a comfortable method that does not require the card details to be entered. These are provided only once, in the course of the first transaction in a given online store. Any subsequent shopping requires only a single click to confirm the order. One Click is an ideal solution for loyal customers who keep returning to their favourite stores.

Recurring payments

As the name suggests, recurring payments render the possibility of paying for recurring orders. As a buyer, you obviously have to accept them and provide your card details, which will be remembered. Thanks to recurring payments, you don’t have to remember about fees for your favourite TV series or podcasts, fitness club membership or any other services provided based on the subscription model. You can withdraw your consent for recurring payments at any time.

Google Pay/Apple Pay

These popular mobile payment methods also utilize payment cards! In order to make a payment, you first have to enter your card details in the application, e.g. Google Pay. Next, the app can be used as an electronic wallet. Crucially, Apple Pay and Google Pay do not transfer the card details to the seller (merchant) or the payment operator (acquirer). Apple Pay / Google Pay transactions may be authorized with one click or Face ID, for instance.

Currency payments

Thanks to currency payments, foreign buyers may pay for their shopping in Polish online stores in their own currency, which allows them to avoid disadvantageous currency conversion. Payment cards also work “the other way round”. Thus, Polish e-buyers may pay comfortably in foreign stores with cards issued by Polish banks.

What else should we know about card payments?

Each of the above-mentioned payment methods may be implemented directly in a store (the so-called White Label model), as well as in Przelewy 24 payment template. An advantage of the former is the fact that no redirection is necessary – the entire shopping process takes place on your website. The simplicity of the payment interface further elevates buyers’ user experience. The payment template is an equally intuitive tool which is well known to the e-buyers in Poland. Setting the individual background and placing the store’s logo is conducive to consistent shopping experience.

What sets card payments apart from other order payment methods is the possibility of claiming the chargeback, i.e. the return of the due payment. This functionality turns out particularly useful when the buyer comes across a dishonest seller or a seller threatened with insolvency, which is why the order has not been performed accurately. Chargeback is a complaint procedure carried out by the bank that issued the payment card.
